who will YOU miss this Christmas?

we all realise that sooner or later the Christmas table will eventually become empty.
I consider myself lucky that I have had my share of years of joy but this Christmas seems to be more darker, shaded by serious stuff. NOT FUN. my prediction for our Christmas lunch this year would be everything from the late arrival of the turkey, bipolar disease, also ka-ching-less.

A toast to absent friends: Not everyone can be with their loved ones this Christmas
A toast to absent friends: Not everyone can be with their loved ones this Christmas

my eldest sister is miles away from home.and i actually missed her.a lot. i always prided myself that we were-are-all still a family despite our family rifts about 4 years ago. i am sure everyone in my family suffered the agony of missing our family being close and all. like the old days.
i know Christmas is for children. but i still want my fair share of white Christmas baby jesus!
I have no boyfriend to be home alone with in the first place, so I am in the top position to feel sorry for myself, though the pangs kicked in for several days after the announcement.
Nothing stays the same, I convinced myself, life moves on. Christmas, too, is a moveable feast. The turkey is ordered and the stockings are filling.decently. i hope.

i should stop internetting before my bipolar streaks kicking in. i can rattle and whine until New Year. HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND BLESSED NEW YEAR. 2012.lets have a smooch.

05:45 Richard Blackden, our Wall Street correspondent, has been to visit the Apple Store on New York's Fifth Avenue. He writes:
Apple's store at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan is the only one in America, and possibly in the world, that's open 24 hours. Arriving there at about 11:30pm, there was only a crowd of 20 or so people, which I was told had been closer to 50 or so an hour earlier.
"I was at work when I find out and felt I wasn't going to relax if I just went home," said Nick Wynja, a product director at a technology start up in New York. Wynja said he put some thoughts down on a notepad and left it as one of the growing number of tributes to Jobs.
Another New Yorker who had come out was Marc Georges, a student, who said he had been surprised at his reaction to the death of someone he's never met even though he was a fan of Apple's products. While the crowd was relatively small, it offered a poignant reminder that Jobs was much more than the chief executive of just another company.
05:30 The Huffington Post has this list of 10 things you didn't know about Steve Jobs.
05:22 There is reportedly a sombre mood at Apple's Cupertino headquarters in California, where flags are flying at half mast. A group of mourners has gathered on the lawn outside the building where a man is playing the bagpipes.

At the downtown San Francisco Apple store, people held up pictures of Jobs on their iPads and taped greeting cards and post-it notes to the store window saying "thank you Steve" and "I hate cancer." There were also candles and red apples left outside.

Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder:
"People sometimes have goals in life. Steve Jobs exceeded every goal he set himself."
Paul Allan, co-founder of Microsoft:
"We've lost a unique tech pioneer and auteur who knew how to make amazingly great products. Steve fought a long battle against tough odds in a very brave way. 03:15 Here is Barack Obama's statement in full:
Quote"Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world and talented enough to do it.
By building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the Internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grown-ups alike.
Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: He changed the way each of us sees the world.
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve's wife, Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him."
03:03 Twitter has been flooded with reaction to Jobs' death. The site initially struggled with the deluge of tweets. At one point, five of the site's top 10 trending topics were related to Jobs: RIP Steve Jobs, ThankYouSteve, iHeaven, iClouds and Only 56.

02:50 Here's the view on Jobs' legacy from inside the electronics industry. Computerworld says Jobs was a man of conviction who left an indelible mark on computing and that the sector will never be the same again.
02:40 The Wall Street Journal has republished Jobs' well-known 2005 commencement address at Standford University, in which he reflected on life, career and mortality:
Quote"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Quote"For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor,'' Gates said in an e-mailed statement. "I will miss Steve immensely.''
"Insanely great'' was of one of Jobs' favorite expressions.
"The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come,'' Gates said.
"Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.
"I'm truly saddened to learn of (his) death," he said. "Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work."

i miss Steve Jobs!

Apple iPhone 5? Nope. It's the 4S.

Apple's Philip Schiller and the iPhone 4S
Apple has announced its next iPhone and it won't be called the iPhone 5, but rather the iPhone 4S.
From the outside, the iPhone 4S looks just like the iPhone 4 -- which may disappoint some hoping for a new form factor.
On the inside however, the iPhone 4S is a new device, said Philip Schiller, is Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
Most notably, perhaps, is the addition of Apple's dual-core A5 chip, which is built by Samsung.
The A5 in the iPhone 4S will offer seven-times faster graphics for better mobile gameplay and "up to" twice as fast overall as the A4 chip in the iPhone 4, Schiller said.
The iPhone 4S battery life will also be the best of any iPhones thus far, too, with 8 hours of talk time and 40 hours of listening to music.
The iPhone 4S has a new wireless system that can "intelligently switch" between its two antennas to "make even better call quality," Schiller said.
So what does that mean exactly? Apple is promising that users will be able to download data much faster than before using HSDPA cellular technology. The iPhone 4S won't be a 4G phone, but it will have 4G-like download speeds and send and receive data a lot faster.
As expected, the iPhone 4S will also have an upgraded camera -- 8-megapixels -- capable of shooting images at a resolution of 3264x2448 pixels. That's 60% more pixels than the iPhone 4's 5-megapixel camera.
Apple said the 4S's sensor is much better too with a "five element lens." Schiller said: "Here we've really gone overboard," with an f/2.4 aperture which will improve photo quality in low light situations.
Schiller even said the iPhone 4S takes photos a lot faster than its rivals too. The Droid Bionic takes 3.7 seconds to take a pic, Schiller said, while the iPhone 4S takes just 1.1 seconds.
The camera will shoot better video too -- at a high definition resolution of 1080p.
Apple has yet to say just how much the iPhone 4S will sell for, what carriers it will be available on or when its release date is.
So, what do you think so far? Are you excited for the iPhone 4S? Bummed it's not a proper iPhone 5 with a new look and a bigger screen? Sticking with Android or Windows Phone? Sound off in the comments.

---> seen this in the LATIMES.com 11 minutes ago. so the big question is to get it or not to get one. I was thinking of NOT getting the iPhone 4S. But Siri is quickly changing that. They just lost me in all this geeky photography mumbo jumbo. Today I found out that my current phone is a piece of crap. but, please, stop posting intelligent alien tweets / blogs heavily tagged w/ #apple. i dont understand them. SIRI-USLY.

Price of the iPhone 4S will be the same as current iPhone 4's. iPhone 4 will be $99 and iPhone 3GS will be free with contract. iPhone pre-orders start Oct 7, release date on the 14th. And now on Sprint.

Tiny Pacific Island of Tuvalu calls state of emergency due to water shortage

Tuvalu, the fourth smallest country in the world, has called a state of emergency
Tuvalu, the fourth smallest country in the world, has called a state of emergency
The tiny Pacific Island nation of Tuvalu, located midway between Australia and Hawaii, has declared a state of emergency due to a severe shortage of fresh water.
Officials said today that some parts of the country - the fourth smallest in the world with a population of 11,000 - may only have a two-day supply.
New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully said his country was working with the Red Cross to deliver aid workers and supplies as quickly as possible.
He said Tuvalu first declared the emergency last week and the situation had deteriorated since then.
Water was scarce in the capital, Funafuti, and a number of outlying islands, McCully said, adding that he had received reports saying some places would run out of fresh water within days.
A New Zealand defence service C-130 plane arrived today carrying two desalination units and a number of water containers, McCully said.
Tuvalu isn't the only Pacific island running out of fresh water after six months of low rainfall.
Officials from Australia and New Zealand have said they are worried about other islands in the region, including Tokelau.
McCully said his government would work with aid agencies to try and figure out a long-term response to the situation.
Today is a national holiday in Tuvalu and government officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
